Converting a Licence
From a BC licence to a Japanese licence
A licence obtained in BC (Class 7 or Class 5) can be converted to a Japanese licence.
Conditions
- You can show that you stayed at least three months in the country that issued the licence after obtaining it
- Your foreign licence is still valid
You’ll need
- Your foreign driver’s licence
- Passport (showing a stay of three months or more)
- Certificate of residence (住民票) showing your registered domicile
- A Japanese translation of the licence (e.g. from a JAF office in Japan)
- One photo
- Application fee
If you hold a Class 5, you will already have held your Class 7 for at least a year, so the requirement to stay a further three months after getting Class 5 does not apply. The conversion involves a short knowledge test (pass with 7 out of 10) and a short road test (you can take lessons at the driving test centre). Procedures vary slightly between prefectures, so please check with your local driving licence centre.
