You’ll need: $15 test fee, $10 learner’s licence fee, two pieces of ID (e.g. passport and study or work permit) Study with ICBC’s guide Learn to Drive Smart, which you can download free from the ICBC website or pick up at any driver licensing office. The questions are based on this guide: there are 50 multiple-choice questions, and you need 40 correct (80%) to pass.

The test is not available in Japanese (it is offered in 12 languages, including English, Chinese and French). You can’t talk or use electronic dictionaries or other devices during the test, but you can listen to an audio recording of the questions.

You can take the test online (you’ll need a computer with a webcam) or at a driver licensing office. If you go to an office, book an appointment first.

To help you study, the ICBC website (www.icbc.com) has a practice knowledge test that works just like the real one.

You get your result straight away. If you don’t pass, you can take the test again from the next day (the fee applies each time). Once you pass, you’ll have a quick vision screening and your learner’s licence (L) is issued. If you passed online, you collect it at a driver licensing office. From that day you can practise driving, as long as a supervisor (25 or older, with a Class 5 or higher licence) is in the car with you. Display the “L” sign on the back of the car while you practise. A learner’s licence is valid for two years.

試験勉強の手助けとして、ICBCのWEBSITE (www.icbc.com) で本番さながらの練習問題に挑戦できます。ICBCサイトの中の (Practice knowledge Test) というところをクリックしてください。

学科試験の合否はその場で分かります。不合格の場合は、翌日以降に再受験できます（受験料は毎回かかります）。合格すれば、簡単な視力検査を行います。視力検査に通ると仮免許証（L）が発行され（オンラインで合格した場合は、ドライバーライセンスオフィスで受け取ります）、その日から同乗者（２５歳以上で、Class5以上の免許を持った人）が乗っていれば、車の運転の練習が始められます。練習中は、車の後部に"L"マークを表示します。仮免許証は２年間有効です。
